The Euroexam Mission

promoting real-world communicative skills

We believe that an ability to communicate is more important than a theoretical knowledge of the systems of language.

The Euroexam Centre aspires to unite the expertise of communicative language teaching with the ‘can-do’ communicative criteria of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to design examinations which promote real-world communicative skills.

The Euroexam Centre promotes quality in language teaching and the development of new initiatives by working together with a wide network of testing centres and partner organisations in Europe and beyond in organising training courses, publishing test and training materials and in delivering  tandardised assessment tools for the communicative classroom.

Euroexams won the European Commission’s European Language Label award in 2001 for innovation in communicative testing.

Our vision is that students look forward to the chance of demonstrating their language skills in motivating and exciting contexts, and in fair and challenging tests. We take special care in designing tests which have a positive washback effect on teaching.

Background

15 Years in Europe

The Euroexam Centre was established to develop public state-accredited language examinations, and to offer testing Services to schools across Europe.

Euroexam’s General English tests are provided at five levels: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. For business learners, the EuroPro Exams (English for professional and business purposes) are available at B1, B2 and C1 level. The Euroexams are also offered in German. While Euroexam tests have no separate grammar and vocabulary part, the foundations of effective language use are assessed through the separate tests of the four communicative skills.

The Euroexam – the first suite of exams based directly on the Common European Framework – reflects what students, teachers, and employers expect from language courses and exams today: success in real communication.

The Euroexam Centre was selected to participate in the Council of Europe’s project to relate language examinations to the CEFR, to pilot new reference procedures, and to provide reference examination tasks for educational institutions in Europe.

150.000 candidates in Europe and beyond

Euroexam was launched in the year when the Common European Framework was first published.

In 2001, Euroexam became the first exam board to provide tests directly based on the CEFR ‘Can do’ scales.

In 2011, Euroexam e-learning services was awarded the European Language Label of the European Commission; thus – uniquely – the Euroexam became a two-time winner of this highly-esteemed award.

The first sitting of the Euroexam took place in 2001 with 105 candidates, and, by the end of 2015, the annual number of people taking the Euroexams had reached 20,000 across Europe.

In 2005, Euroexam partnered with the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain and IH Madrid to jointly administer the EuroPro exams in Spain, with the EuroPro exams replacing the Chamber’s own English language examination system.

Today, seven times a year, the Euroexams are offered through a network of 85 local testing centres across Europe at language schools, secondary schools and university departments.

In 2015, the Language Policy Unit of the Council of Europe invited Euroexams and other leading institutions with documented expertise to participate in the “Illustrative Reading & Listening test tasks and items related to the CEFR” project. This project is a follow-up of development work which started in 2004 to facilitate the standardisation process for reading and listening tasks.

Euroexam in Russia

Euroexams started its operations in the Russian Federation in September 2015. By 2016, over 30 partner institutions had joined the Euroexam network, offering international English examinations for young learners from the age of 10, as well as for young adults and professionals.

All local exams are conducted by independent native speaker examiners. This makes the Euroexams fair, impartial, and secure.

Our mission across the Russian Federation is to provide reliable and fair exams which not only test students’ ability to communicate, but also give a positive and motivating goal for students and their teachers to work towards. We take special care in designing tests which have a positive washback effect on teaching.

Euroexam Traning Services

The Euro Examination Centre established a teacher training department in 2002, which undertook the training of examiners and of teachers preparing their students for the Euroexams. Since 2002, 450 examiners have been trained, and over 500 have participated in accredited teacher training courses. The Euro Examination Centre also offers workshops and short training courses on the background and practical aspects of the CEFR for teachers of English, German and other languages.

Euroexam Publications

The Euroexam Centre publishes course books and practice tests which are widely available through local testing centres, bookshops and online. Practice tests and teaching materials, which can be downloaded without charge, have also been made available, as well as weekly downloadable tasks. All Euroexam audio material is downloadable free of charge.

Euroexam E-learning

In October 2010, Euroexam e-learning was launched. Future candidates − or any learner interested − can take a placement test and start a six-week introductory, or a four-week intensive course, covering both language and exam skills, and can receive online guidance from experienced teachers. After five years of operation, the number of registered participants reached over 100,000. These courses, provided free of charge, are managed by dedicated professional and technical staff.

Candidates with special needs

The Euroexam Centre is aware of its obligations to candidates with special needs. Those with dyslexia or dysgraphia have specially-designed question and answer papers. Visually-impaired candidates may have the examination dictated to them and are allowed to use computers with a Braille keyboard. Invigilators are specifically trained to work with these candidates. Approximately 250 candidates with special needs sit the Euroexams each year.

Legal and professional background

The Euroexam Centre was established in September 2000 within International House. Its remit was to develop a standard examination system for the IH World Organisation, to develop public state-accredited language examinations in Central Europe, and to offer testing services to schools internationally. In November 2004, the Euroexam Centre became a wholly independent entity (Euro Examinations Ltd), working in professional partnership with International House. Euroexam’s administrative centre, which is also responsible for test development and teacher training, is currently based in Budapest, Hungary. Educational and marketing support for the 85-strong network of local testing centres across Europe and beyond is co-ordinated by Euroexam International, based in London, UK.

The Euroexam Centre is a member of EALTA, the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment.
